Work to improve access at Wilstock and Stockmoor Country Park has continued over recent months, helping local people make the most of the nature on their doorstep.
Thanks to the support of our dedicated volunteers, a new bird screen has recently been installed beside one of the park’s larger ponds. Inspired by similar designs at Shapwick Heath NNR, the screen provides a sheltered spot for watching wildlife. The pond is a fantastic place to see a variety of birds, with swans nesting there each year, alongside occasional sightings of kingfishers and bearded reedlings. Plans are underway to decorate the screen with etched wildlife designs, and local children will be invited to contribute their own drawings.
Access to the area has also been improved, with several tonnes of stone used to create a new accessible path to the bird screen, as well as upgrading two routes that often become muddy during the winter. These improvements mean visitors can now enjoy two circular walking routes throughout the year.
Further enhancements are planned for the summer, including the installation of waymarker posts highlighting three suggested routes to help visitors explore the park with confidence.
These works have been funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and build on a range of improvements delivered over the past 18 months, including new signage, path upgrades and a natural play trail.
